False cognate

A false cognate (often called a false friend) is a word that looks similar in two languages but means something different in each — Spanish actualmente means "currently," not "actually." The resulting sentence is usually grammatical, which is why grammar checkers miss the error.

A false cognate — often called a false friend — is a word pair that looks alike across two languages but carries different meanings. Spanish actualmente means currently, not actually. German bekommen means to receive, not to become. Russian «магазин» (magazin) is a shop, not a magazine.

Linguists sometimes reserve false cognate for accidental lookalikes and false friend for words with a shared root that drifted apart. In everyday ESL work the distinction rarely matters: the trap is identical.

Wrong: Actually I am finishing my dissertation, so I have no time for conferences. Right: Currently I am finishing my dissertation, so I have no time for conferences.

The first sentence is grammatical, spelled correctly, and passes most grammar checkers — which is exactly why false cognates are dangerous. The error is not in the English; it is in the meaning you imported from your first language. Your reader receives a different message than the one you sent, and no red underline warns either of you.

False cognates are one form of L1 interference: your first language quietly supplying the "obvious" word. The fix is not more grammar study but awareness — most language pairs have a few dozen high-frequency false friends, and learning the list for your own pair removes the bulk of these errors.

For AI detection, false cognates cut both ways. A subtle meaning slip like this is a distinctly human trace — language models almost never produce one. But writers who run their text through heavy AI paraphrasing to "sound more native" strip those slips out, along with much of what marks the text as human-written.
