What this sentence expander does

A sentence expander takes a statement that is correct but thin and shows you how it could carry more thinking. You paste one sentence of up to 300 characters, pick one expansion direction, and press Run. An AI model returns three options, each with a short title describing what it added.

  • Depth — specifies what the claim actually covers: which group, which setting, which aspect.
  • Cause — spells out the mechanism, the because or which leads to that the original sentence skipped.
  • Nuance — adds scope, conditions and hedging, so the claim says no more than you can defend.

You get options, not an answer. Read all three, keep the parts that match what you actually mean, and rewrite the rest in your own words.

Example: one sentence, the cause vector

This is an illustrative example of the kind of output the tool returns, not a saved result.

Input: «Social media is bad for students.»

Vector: cause

  • Attention mechanism — «Frequent social media use may harm students' academic performance because constant notifications fragment the attention needed for sustained reading [Insert citation].»
  • Sleep displacement — «Late-night scrolling can reduce students' sleep, which in turn is likely to affect concentration in morning classes [Add your data].»
  • Social comparison — «Exposure to curated peer content may lower some students' self-esteem, which could indirectly reduce motivation to study [Insert citation].»

Notice two things. Each version commits to one causal path instead of three at once, and each marks where evidence belongs with a placeholder rather than inventing a study. Choosing which mechanism your essay is really about is your job, and it is the decision that makes the sentence yours.

Longer is not the goal — reasoning is

If you only need more words, this is the wrong tool, and phrases like «it is important to note that» will not fool a reader who grades for argument. The expander is built to add information a reader can use: a mechanism, a boundary, a qualification. It will not:

  • invent statistics, studies, authors or quotations — where evidence is needed you get [Insert citation] or [Add your data];
  • decide what your argument is — three different directions are offered precisely so you choose;
  • check facts — a plausible cause is not a proven one until you find the source.

After expanding, run the result through the wordiness checker: if a new clause adds length without adding meaning, cut it.

Why English sentences often need the «because» spelled out

Many academic traditions trust the reader to supply the link between a claim and its reason. English academic writing usually does not: examiners expect the logical connection to be on the page, and a bare assertion like «Social media is bad for students» reads as opinion rather than analysis. Writers who think in another language are often marked down for this even when their ideas are strong.

The nuance vector addresses a second convention: hedging. Words like may, tends to and in some contexts are not weakness in English — they show you know the limits of your evidence. For more on this, read our guide to hedging in academic writing. Seeing the same sentence expanded three ways is a quick way to learn which connectors and hedges fit which kind of claim.

Where to take the sentence next

A developed sentence can still be hard to follow if it stacks too many clauses. Paste the paragraph it lives in into the sentence structure checker to see whether your sentences vary in length and form. If you want to keep working on the whole draft, open the result in the Diglot editor.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sentence expander?
A sentence expander is a tool that develops a short sentence into a fuller one. This one gives three options in one direction you choose — depth, cause or nuance — so the added words carry reasoning rather than padding.
Which vector should I pick?
Pick cause when your sentence states a result without saying why. Pick depth when the claim is vague about who or what it covers. Pick nuance when the claim sounds too absolute for the evidence you have. If you are unsure, run the same sentence with two vectors and compare.
Will the expanded sentence include real sources?
No. The tool never invents citations, numbers or quotations. Wherever a claim needs support it inserts a placeholder such as [Insert citation] or [Add your data], and finding that support is up to you.
Can I use this to make my essay reach a word count?
It will add words, but that is a side effect. Each option adds a mechanism, a scope or a qualification. If your essay is short because an argument is underdeveloped, that helps; if it is short because you have said everything, filler will not improve the grade.
Will using a sentence expander get me flagged by AI detectors or Turnitin?
We cannot promise anything about how any detector will score your text, and this tool is not designed to avoid detection. It is designed to show you options you then rewrite in your own words. Check your institution's policy on AI assistance and, when it is required, say that you used one.
Is my sentence stored?
No. It is sent to our AI provider only to generate the three options and is not saved in a database, written to logs or used for training.
