A syllable is one beat of a spoken word: a single vowel sound, with or without consonants around it. «Cat» has one syllable, «paper» has two, «banana» has three. To count them yourself, count vowel sounds, not vowel letters:

1. Say the word slowly and tap once for each beat. Holding a hand under your chin helps: it drops once per syllable.
2. Ignore a silent final e. «Cake» is 1 syllable, not 2.
3. Treat vowel pairs that make one sound as one beat: «boat» 1, «queue» 1. But two sounds are two beats: «poem» is 2 and «idea» is 3.
4. Check endings. A regular «-ed» adds a syllable only after t or d: «walked» 1, «wanted» 2.

Three groups count syllables, for different reasons:

• Poets and lyricists need a fixed syllable count per line — a haiku runs 5-7-5, a sonnet ten syllables per line (iambic pentameter) — and a single misplaced word breaks the meter.
• Writers checking readability count syllables because readability metrics (such as Flesch Reading Ease) depend heavily on average syllables per word. Texts packed with multisyllabic words score lower in readability.
• Second-language (ESL) writers frequently reach for longer, Latin-derived words («utilize», «approximately», «facilitate») over natural shorter alternatives («use», «about», «help»). Checking syllable density helps keep English crisp and direct.

English spelling does not map cleanly onto sound, so a counter that only reads spelling gets common words wrong: idea, actually, poem and being all hide a syllable the letters do not show. This tool counts a word from the CMU Pronouncing Dictionary (about 117,000 English words) when the word is in it. For any other word it falls back to spelling rules: groups of vowel letters (treating y as a vowel), silent final e, the regular past-tense -ed, and never less than one syllable per word.

For example: «haiku» counts as 2 syllables, «syllable» as 3, and «An old silent pond» as 5. Counting runs in your browser and your text is never uploaded; only a small static dictionary file is downloaded when you start typing.

The dictionary gives the primary spoken American pronunciation, so words that are usually said with a reduced syllable count short: «chocolate» is 2, «vegetable» 3, «interesting» 3. Words with two accepted pronunciations («fire», «hour») have one count here. For a poem with a strict metre, check those by ear.

If your syllable average is high and your writing feels dense or overly formal, the fix is lexical, not structural. Swap inflated words for clear, direct words where the meaning is identical: utilise → use, demonstrate → show, facilitate → help, in order to → to, at this point in time → now.
